First Day of Longmont Fiber Optic Sign-up Sees High Demand

As Longmont Power and Communications opened up NextLight municipal Internet to roughly 500 homes in Southmoor Park for the first time Monday, the phone wouldn’t stop ringing.

LPC customer service reps worked from 7 a.m. and through lunch answering questions from would-be first customers about billing and installation. Some administrative assistants also pitched in to handle the call volume.

By 4:30 p.m. Monday, the staff had signed up about 38 homes, or roughly 7.6 percent of the smallish launch area near the LPC offices — people who live off of Lefthand Drive or Holly Avenue.

Once residents in the launch area call LPC, staff set up a time to come out and do an installation consultation, where they discuss how to best run the underground fiber optic cable to the house and where the cable should enter the house.
