Chattanooga’s municipal FTTH network is near completion

After overcoming political wrangling with the city’s incumbent service providers to build its Fiber to the Home network, the joint Chattanooga, Tenn. Electric Power Board (EPB) network will be completed by the end of this year.

Earlier this fall, EPB caught the attention of the launched a 1 Gbps service for the power user that doesn’t have a problem paying $350 for the service. Users also have the option of buying a lower-priced 30 Mbps and 50 Mbps symmetrical service with various triple play bundled options.

If Seattle moves forward on the Community Fiber Network it has been considering, it will be the largest such network in the nation. However, as we recently noted, progress has been slow. Shutesbury TM approves broadband proposal

SHUTESBURY — Shutesbury became the first town in western Massachusetts to act on a proposal aimed at bringing broadband Internet access to every resident in the region at a special Town Meeting Tuesday night.

Voters unanimously approved a plan that would allow the town to create its own telecommunications department and join with other municipalities to establish the fiber-optic network needed to provide high-speed Internet access.

Salisbury, NC to launch municipal FTTH service next month

After AT&T (NYSE: T) and Time Warner Cable(NYSE: TWC-WI)–two of North Carolina’s largest service providers–failed to get necessary state legislative support to stop municipal broadband from getting off the ground, Salisbury, N.C. will now begin offering residential Fiber to the Home services beginning this November.

One of the attractive elements about the Salisbury’s “Fibrant” service set is the price. According to the intial pricing list, subscribers could buy a symmetrical 15 Mbps data tier for $45 a month, while a symmetrical 25 Mbps tier will cost $65 a month.

Lyfe Communications reaches TV broadcast agreement with UTOPIA

OCTOBER 19, 2010 — Lyfe Communications, Inc. (OTCBB: LYFE) Connected Lyfe, provider of converged network services, says it has reached an agreement to acquire television broadcast rights from the Utah Telecommunications Open Infrastructure Agency (UTOPIA). The company’s television service includes local and basic cable network channels, a premium or extended channel package, and individual add on channel packages.

UTOPIA provides open access fiber to the home (FTTH) infrastructure to 16 communities in Utah.
